Edible “Insects” at the Snack Table
Bugs and insects are a-plenty outside during this time of year. For children, this is a fun time to explore all the excitement of the little creatures. Have some fun this month teaching the kids how to build edible, healthy bugs and insects for snacks. Build edible bugs and insects using creative ingredients for body parts. Here are some ideas:
HEAD
- cherry tomato
- grape
- dried plum
- blackberry
- black or green olive
- hard-boiled egg half
EYES/SPOTS
- raisins
- mini chocolate chips
- dry cereal pieces
- slivered almonds
- blueberries
- dried fruit
BODY
- apple half
- breakfast sausage link
- string cheese stick
- cracker
- baby carrot or celery
- stick
- bread (cut into shapes using cookie cutters)
WINGS
- pretzel twists
- sliced strawberries
- cucumber slices
- turkey pepperoni
- cheese slices
FEET/LEGS/ANTENNAE
- bell pepper sticks
- carrot sticks
- chow mein noodles
- pretzel sticks
Put the parts together (peanut/almond butter or hummus work as great “glue”) and you’ve made an edible creature!
