IRS to Offer Home Office Safe Harbor Rule Which Will Affect Family Child Care

As you may have heard or read, the Internal Revenue Service has a new ruling called the “Safe Harbor Rule” that will allow family child care providers (as well as other home based businesses) to claim $1,500 in home office expenses without any record keeping and without filing Form 8829 (Expenses for Business Use of Your Home). This will be effective with the 2013 taxes that are filed in early 2014. It may be something sponsors could use when recruiting providers. The rule will make it easier to attract providers to be licensed (only licensed or license exempt providers can use this rule).

This ruling may or may not be beneficial to all providers.
